Pronouncing “R”
Rの発音
日本人はRとLの発音を混同することで有名ですが、一部の日本語学習者にとってはラリルレロの発音が難しいようです。「りんご」「論文」「連絡」など、ラ行で始まる言葉が特に発音しづらいということでした。ローマ字ではラ行にRを使いますが、これでは声に出すとあまり正確でないことがわかります。英語のRのようなぼんやりとした音でもなければ、スペイン語のように舌を巻いた音でもなく、ましてやフランス語のようにのどを使った音でもありません。ちなみに私の知っている人でラ行をLで発音している人がいました。確かにRよりもLのほうがはっきりと聞こえるし、どうせ日本人はRもLも区別できませんので（笑）、試行錯誤の末Lのほうが誤解が少ないという結論にでも至ったのでしょうか。
ラ行はRとDを混ぜたような音だと思います。そういえば私が少しだけ習ったヒンディー語には、レトロフレックスRといって、ちょうど同じような音がありました。ですから例えばアメリカで私が自分の名前を日本語の発音でそのまま「りえこ」と言うと、「ああ、ディエゴ」などとヘンに納得されることが多いのです。ディエゴって男性の名前ですよね・・・。
では少しだけ練習しましょう。

前回のNプラス母音の発音もそうですが、ラ行の発音ももしかしたらマイナーなポイントなのかもしれません。できなくても９０点の発音はできるけれど、残り１０点のためにいかにも「外国人」ぽく聞こえてしまうのはもったいないと思ったので、ここで指摘させていただきました。今後もより「ネイティブ」っぽく聞こえるコツを紹介していくつもりです。

いかにも：indeed, really
～ぽい、ぽく：as if
もったいない：wasteful
指摘する（してきする）：to point out
コツ：hang, trick

Wow. I found this site through Japanesepod101. Both of you guys are doing a great job. My Japanese used to be, I’ll say, close to upper intermediate level but now it’s gotten to more like lower intermediate due to lack of practice. I love this blog. I’ll definitely be recommending this to all those who are studying Japanese. Lately, I’ve forgotten a lot of the Japanese I had learnt in the past 2 years, and this site definitely helps tremendously, especially the audio files along with it. Keep it up! =)
